Under the harsh, flat noon glare of a Sydney laneway, a laundry line stretches between weathered brick walls, heavy with drying white sheets that billow slightly in the stagnant air. Several wide-brimmed sun hats hang from the line, their brims casting short, sharp shadows against the fabric, while a colorful plastic laundry basket sits on the cracked concrete below, overflowing with damp towels. To the left, a rusted hinge on a metal gate catches a glint of light, against the smooth, pale stucco of the adjacent terrace house.
