Driftwood just after sunrise in Bergen

by Ruby Hull

A weathered piece of gray driftwood rests horizontally on the rough wooden sill of a traditional blue-painted window in Bergen, its surface textured by years of North Sea exposure. The pale morning light from just after sunrise falls through the glass, casting soft, elongated shadows across the interior wall behind the wood. Small patches of white salt residue rest on the crevices of the gnarled timber, against the deep indigo paint of the window frame. One droplet of condensation hangs from a lower knot in the driftwood, catching the early light.
