Diffraction Pattern on Blackout Curtains Oxford Observatory

by Everett Mack

Bright interference fringes stretch horizontally across the deep grey folds of heavy blackout curtains inside an Oxford observatory control room. The light pattern alternates between sharp white bands and soft shadows, casting a rhythmic geometry against the textured fabric. Warm firelight from an unseen source bathes the right side of the room, highlighting floating dust particles that drift in the air. Early spring shadows from nearby windows touch the lower curtain hem. A faint reflection of the fringes glimmers on a polished metal instrument panel resting beside the fabric.
