Dawn Light on Tools

Mist rests on the canal’s edge, softening the sharp angles of brick gables and the dark water below. On a narrow balcony, a weathered wooden railing shows signs of damp exposure, with a pair of thick, grease-stained work gloves resting casually atop a rusted iron latch. The rust blooms in orange patches against the grey metal, against the slick, wet surface of a nearby tool caddy. Below, the canal reflects the pale, diffused light of dawn, while a single clothespin dangles from a line, swaying slightly in the cold air. A quiet moment of pause, where the tools of labor sit idle against the backdrop of a sleeping city.
