Crowded River Ferry Crossing at Nautical Dawn in Kolkata India

A dense cluster of passengers fills the wooden deck of a traditional ferry boat cutting through the Hooghly River under the dim blue light of nautical dawn. Men in shirts and lungis stand shoulder to shoulder, some holding onto overhead ropes while others lean against the rusted metal railings. The water is dark and mirror-still, reflecting the faint silhouette of the distant Howrah Bridge and the silhouette of bridge piers standing in the calm river surface. Steam rises from the small diesel engine at the stern, mixing with the cool morning air. A few passengers hold plastic cups of tea, and the overall scene shows the busy, rhythmic commute of Kolkata residents starting their day on the water.
