A street vendor stands behind a makeshift metal stall in a Johannesburg neighborhood during the dark hours before sunrise. He wears a stained white apron while stirring a large aluminum saucepan over a glowing gas burner. The steam from the cooking food rises into the cold air, illuminated by the harsh yellow light of a nearby streetlamp. Empty cardboard boxes and plastic containers are stacked nearby on the pavement. The vendor looks toward the empty street, waiting for the first customers to arrive in the quiet predawn stillness of the city.
