Child Balancing in New Orleans

Morning light spills across the wrought-iron balcony of a shotgun house in the Garden District, catching the oxidized green patina of the railing and the peeling cream paint of the shutter. Below, on the cracked sidewalk, a neighborhood child in a bright yellow raincoat balances precariously on a wooden stool, one foot raised as if mid-dance or play. The stool’s legs rest near a discarded metal hose nozzle left by a maintenance worker, its brass surface dull but gleaming faintly in the low sun. A shallow reflection of the child’s yellow coat shimmers on a brushed steel trash can lid nearby, distorting the image into a playful smear of color.
