The damp dusk light in Valparaiso’s Cerro Concepción falls through a corrugated tin awning, illuminating a narrow, rain-slicked alleyway where the steep cobblestones glisten under the orange spill of a distant streetlamp. A local vendor, huddled under a translucent plastic tarp, manages a small cart selling roasted chestnuts, the steam rising in thick, white plumes that catch the low light. Beside him, a stack of worn, colorful magazines rests on a wooden crate, their glossy covers reflecting the wet pavement. The raw, textured reality of the city’s hills, with peeling pastel paint on the surrounding walls and the rhythmic drip of rain from the eaves, creating a candid, smile-inducing moment of daily life persisting against the encroaching gray.
