Checking Reflection in Mexico City

First light after rain washes the narrow alley in Mexico City with a cool, diffused glow, reflecting off the wet cobblestones and slicking the red lacquered wood of a nearby stall’s shutter. A shopkeeper stands just inside the doorway, his silhouette framed against the dim interior, holding a small hand mirror to check his reflection in the glass of a closed display case. The mirror catches the pale sky, creating a sharp, bright punctum against the damp, dark tones of the street. Raindrops rest on the mesh colander hanging from a hook above, dripping steadily onto a pitcher below.
