Calligraphy Brushes and Seals in Ouidah Shrine

A wooden tray rests on a stone surface, holding an array of calligraphy brushes with dark, damp bristles and carved seals of varying sizes. The tray sits within a shrine lined with rows of paper lanterns that cast soft, diffused shadows across the walls. Late afternoon light floods the space through high openings, illuminating dust motes suspended in the humid air. The wet season is evident in the glistening surfaces of the seals and the slightly swollen wood grain. Lanterns hang in rhythmic rows, their paper skins translucent against the deepening twilight. One seal rests near the tray edge, its carved characters catching the light.
