Bubbling Jjigae Stew on Belbis Noodle Counter

Warm tungsten light glows across the dark red surface of a jjigae stew, where thick bubbles burst and release steam into the still pre-dawn air. The ceramic bowl rests on a small metal burner that sits directly on a pristine white counter. Visible chunks of tofu and vegetables float near the rim, their colors softened by the artificial glow. Beside the bowl, stainless steel ladles and stacks of empty rice bowls line the edge of the workspace. The burner beneath emits a faint orange heat, warming the metal stand that holds the bowl steady. Reflections of the overhead lamps stretch across the wet countertop, creating sharp contrasts against the matte white surfaces. A small pool of condensation gathers at the base of the bowl.
