A weathered brown dog stands patiently beside a rusted bicycle leaning against a weatherboard wall in a quiet Adelaide laneway, the midday winter sun casting sharp, geometric shadows across the damp concrete paving. Beside the bike’s front wheel, a discarded orange peel curls on a small ceramic plate left on a low stone ledge, its bright color against the muted grey of the pavement. A crumpled dish towel hangs from a nearby clothesline, fluttering slightly in the cool air, while a stack of paperbacks rests precariously on a wooden crate nearby, their spines faded by sun exposure. The high, clean lines of modern apartment buildings, their glass facades reflecting the stark blue sky above.
