Cool early morning light spills across the wet granite paving of a Bristol street corner, reflecting the muted grey sky and the faded red of a nearby Victorian terrace. A brown dog, tethered loosely to a wrought-iron railing, stands patiently beside its owner who is adjusting a pair of thick wool slippers on the step of a corner shop. The shop’s wooden door is slightly ajar, revealing the warm glow of a single bulb inside and the edge of a ceramic drinking vessel sitting on the counter. Steam rises faintly from a cup held by the shopkeeper, visible through the glass.
