Brickyard Drying Under Noons Bright Glare

by Lucy Cooper

Rows of unfired clay bricks stretch across a vast, wet yard under the flat, white glare of noon. The dry season air hangs heavy as a light drizzle begins to fall, turning the ground into a slick, dark mirror that reflects the pale sky. Thousands of rectangular blocks stand in precise, converging lines that pull toward a distant vanishing point. The clay surfaces absorb the water, shifting from dusty orange to a deep, saturated rust. Heavy metal racks and the rough concrete floor of the machine shop surround the drying area. Raindrops bead on the porous edges of the bricks, catching the harsh overhead light before sliding down to join the puddles on the ground. One shadow falls sharply beneath the lowest row of blocks.
