Bright late morning light floods the weathered timber deck of a typical Christchurch weatherboard home, casting sharp, geometric shadows across the pale green cladding. A young boy in a bright yellow rain jacket crouches near the foundation, his attention fixed on a small, muddy patch of earth where he has dug a shallow hole. Beside him sits a rusted red metal tool caddy, its compartments holding a trowel and a pair of pruning shears, the metal gleaming under the high sun. Behind him, a wooden step stool leans against the house wall, partially obscured by the shadow of a large rhubarb plant with broad, crinkled leaves that show faint traces of morning dew.
