Bright open daylight floods the narrow market lane in Messina, illuminating a bookseller standing beneath a dense arrangement of calligraphy scrolls. The late autumn air hangs heavy with low-hanging clouds that diffuse the sun, casting soft, even shadows across the weathered wood of the stall. Stacks of paper scrolls in muted ochres and deep indigos line the upper rack, their edges frayed from handling. The bookseller wears a heavy wool coat in charcoal gray, the fabric textured against the smooth, dry paper.
