A cramped, cluttered basement apartment in Montreal’s Plateau district glows with the diffuse grey light of a winter noon. Through a low, frosted window, the faint outline of a snow-covered rooftop and a distant church spire anchors the scene in Quebec. Inside, a threadbare fabric cushion, its seam frayed and yellowed, rests on a worn wooden armchair. Beside it, a vintage Italian majolica plate with cobalt blue patterns sits on a stack of old books, catching a sliver of reflected light. A hand broom leans against the peeling plaster wall, its bristles stiff with dust.
