Barber at Harbor Edge with Second Sun in at a harbor edge in Evora

Barber at Harbor Edge with Second Sun

by Marlene Chase

Deep shadow swallows the courtyard bench where a street barber leans forward, his sleeves speckled with fine dust. A second sun hangs low on the harbor horizon, casting a secondary rim of light that cuts through the twilight air. The stone walls of Évora absorb the dual illumination, creating bold, striking contrast against the dark foreground. Late spring leaves rest on the trees, their edges glowing in the impossible light. The barber's tools rest on the bench, catching the extra highlights from the duplicate sun. Dust motes float in the beam, suspended between the ground and the impossible sky. The second sun's glow creates a sharp, silver edge along the barber's shoulder and the wet harbor stones.
