Mist rests on the narrow Via Maqueda, softening the sharp geometry of the yellow stucco facades and the wrought-iron balconies above. A baker, his face obscured by a flour-dusted cap, leans against a wooden counter outside a dimly lit pastry shop, carefully sliding a heavy iron baking sheet onto a stone slab. The damp air catches the steam rising from the hot pastries, creating a hazy halo around his hands. Nearby, a small terrier waits patiently, its fur damp from the morning fog, eyes fixed on the golden crusts.
