Arranging Olives in Tunis

by Lance Cote

A narrow alley in the Medina of Tunis glows with the amber heat of a summer evening, where sun-warmed stone walls radiate residual daylight into the cooling air. A local vendor stands behind a low wooden counter, his blue apron stained with turmeric and dust, as he carefully arranges bright green olives and jars of preserved lemons. Behind him, a faded patterned rug hangs loosely from a nail, catching the last direct rays of the sun in a sharp diagonal line. To the side, a dented metal rim on a stacked cooking pot reflects a flare of orange light, against the matte texture of the plaster.
