Sunlight floods the narrow cobblestone lane of Petit-Champlain, glancing off the wet, dark stone where a vendor has paused to arrange her wares. A woven basket, its fibers catching the bright late morning light, sits open on a wooden crate, revealing not generic goods but small, hand-painted ceramic tiles bearing French inscriptions. Behind the basket, a white enamel sink is bolted to the exterior wall of a granite building, a utility fixture against the historic masonry. A young woman in a heavy wool coat leans over the crate, her gloved hands adjusting the tiles, while a brass door latch on the adjacent shop door reflects the sky.
