Antique Magic Lantern Sunset in Pucallpa Temple
by Mary Heath
Molten orange light from the setting sun strikes the rear of an antique magic lantern resting on a weathered stone ledge. The brass casing gleams with a warm, liquid glow while the hand-painted glass slides catch the fire, revealing faded figures of saints and spirits in translucent amber and crimson. Behind the device, the open courtyard of a temple in Pucallpa stretches into shadow, framed by low-hanging grey clouds that diffuse the fading daylight. Humid air hangs heavy, suggested by the slight sheen on the metal and the dense, green foliage of the surrounding jungle pressing against the stone walls. The lantern stands solitary against the vast, untamed backdrop of the Peruvian rainforest, its painted details sharp against the encroaching dusk. A sharp edge of brass reflects the dying sun directly onto the rough texture of the stone beneath it.
