Afternoon Light in Ho Chi Minh City

by Patricia Mercado

A weathered facade of a shophouse in District 1 features cracked painted stucco peeling to reveal older layers of color under the clear late-afternoon sun. A rusted metal door latch hangs loosely on a wooden entryway, hinting at a small business or residence within. Green fern fronds spill over a low concrete planter near the sidewalk, their fronds catching the bright directional light. The ground shows signs of heavy use with darkened tile grout visible near the entrance steps. A simple ceramic pot holder rests on a nearby ledge, perhaps discarded or left to dry, blending into the chaotic yet organized clutter of urban Vietnam life without dominating the visual narrative of the street corner.
