Adjusting Scaffolding in Wellington

by Sheila Burt

A damp, grey morning in Wellington’s Te Aroha neighborhood reveals a narrow laneway where the city’s verticality presses in. A local resident, bundled in a bright orange high-vis vest, pauses to adjust a heavy-duty clamp on a scaffolding pole. Beside them, a stack of damp yellow tarps leans against a weathered brick wall, their saturated color contrasting sharply with the muted, rain-slicked pavement. Steam rises faintly from a nearby manhole cover, blurring the lower edge of the frame.
