Adjusting Kettle in Havana

Sunlight slants through the open wooden shutters of a cramped Havana kitchen, illuminating a cluttered counter where a chipped enamel stovetop kettle sits beside a woven fruit bowl overflowing with green plantains and yellow bananas. A pair of metal tongs rests on a stained plate near a houseplant with broad, waxy leaves that lean toward the light. The walls are painted a faded turquoise, peeling slightly to reveal older layers of white plaster. A woman’s hands, dusted with flour, reach into the frame to adjust the kettle handle, her arm blurred by motion. Outside, the sharp shadows of a palm frond stretch across the tiled floor, against the warm, dusty interior.
