Adjusting Grate in Paris

Mist rests on the narrow Rue de la Huchette in Paris, diffusing the sodium glow of a nearby streetlamp into a soft, milky haze that obscures the upper stories of Haussmannian facades. On the wet cobblestones, a municipal worker in a high-visibility vest adjusts a heavy iron grate, his breath visible in the cold air. Beside him, a discarded wooden fruit crate leans against a wrought-iron bollard, its slats dark with moisture. One dappled leaf shadow, cast by an unseen tree above, falls across the damp plaster wall, against the sharp, geometric lines of the metal grating.
