Under the harsh, shadowless glare of a Milanese noon, a street vendor’s cart sits parked against a building with faded ochre stucco. The flat light exposes the grime in the crevices of a wooden crate filled with bruised nectarines, their fuzzy skins against the slick, wet asphalt reflecting the sky. A discarded, graffiti-tagged skateboard leans precariously against the cart’s metal leg, its wheels caked with city dust. Nearby, a ceramic tile from a nearby renovation project lies face down, its glaze reflecting a distorted snippet of the busy pedestrian zone.
