A wet, grey morning in Wellington’s Thorndon suburb reveals a narrow footpath slick with rain, where a rusted bicycle leans against a weathered brick wall. The bike’s front basket holds a single, sodden paper bag and a stack of waterlogged paperbacks, their spines warped from the damp air. Beside it, a frayed length of hemp rope hangs loosely from a hook, its fibers unraveling into the mist. The scene is framed by the green ironwork of a nearby heritage fence, against the dull steel of the bike frame. In the background, the blurred shapes of parked cars and distant hills vanish into the low cloud cover, showing the quiet, damp stillness of the early hour.
