Street Corner in Wellington

by Rebecca Noble

First light after rain diffuses through the low-hanging cloud deck, casting a soft, even glow over a wet Wellington street corner near Lambton Quay. The pavement is slick and dark, reflecting the muted tones of the surrounding weatherboard buildings and the green foliage of a mature tī kōuka palm. One, damp broom leans casually against the corrugated iron wall of a small, independent cafe, its bristles splayed slightly from use. Beside it, a metal magazine rack stands empty, glistening with recent precipitation, while a few faded flyers cling to its wire mesh. In the background, the blurred shapes of parked cars and the distant curve of the harbor are visible through the mist.
