Worn Military Fuel Caddy in Australian Dust in at a checkpoint lane in Western Australia

Worn Military Fuel Caddy in Australian Dust

by Leo Shepard

Flat, cool gray light fills the checkpoint lane in Western Australia during the midday cool season. A metal caddy rests low against the frame, its paint worn and chipped to reveal rust beneath the faded gray. Concrete dust coats the glass fuel sample jar and mutes the edges of the metal frame. Wind whips fine red particles across the dry scrubby grass beside the equipment. The glass reflects the diffuse sky without harsh highlights, showing only the dull institutional gray of the surroundings. Dust settles heavily in the crevices of the metal, blurring sharp lines along the rim. A small accumulation of red sand rests on the glass surface, marking the boundary between the container and the wind-swept landscape.
