Wooden Facade in Bergen

by Mark Mathis

A damp cobblestone alley in Bergen’s Bryggen district reflects the gray morning sky, flanked by tall, weathered Hanseatic wooden facades painted in faded reds and yellows. A local baker steps out onto the stone pavement, carrying a wire basket of warm, crusty knutepalms, the steam rising in thin plumes against the cool air. Beside the entrance, a small, peeling wooden sign for a florist shop hangs askew, its glass window fogged with condensation. A few turnips sit loosely in a burlap sack near the door, their earthy purple tops against the slick, wet stones.
