Wet Traboule in Lyon
by Carl Correa
Rain slicks the cobblestones of a narrow Lyon traboule as a lone cyclist in a yellow raincoat navigates the wet decline, tires hissing against the stone. Above, geraniums spill from wrought-iron balconies, their red blooms stark against the grey dusk, while cracked painted stucco on the building facade peels to reveal layers of ochre and cream. The cyclist leans into a turn, passing a shopfront where a porcelain jar sits on a windowsill, catching the neon reflection from a nearby pharmacy sign. Umbrellas dot the street, their canopies glistening under the amber glow of streetlamps, creating a rhythm of movement against the static, textured walls of the old quarter.
