Wet Stoop in Philadelphia

Rain-slicked brickwork of a Fairmount rowhouse glows under the pale, diffused light of early morning. A cast-iron stair rail, dark and glistening, curves down the stoop, reflecting the gray sky above. On the wet concrete step, a pair of worn leather slippers sits abandoned near the threshold, their soles still damp from the night. Water drips steadily from the eaves, pooling in the gutter where a rusted cookie tin has been repurposed as a makeshift planter for hardy ivy. The quiet aftermath of a storm, with the texture of wet masonry contrasting against the smooth, cold metal of the railing and the organic, decayed edges of the plant life.
