Wet Glass in Liverpool

by Ava Lucero

First light after rain washes the brickwork of a Georgian terrace in Liverpool, turning the damp pavement into a mirror for the overcast sky. A shopkeeper, wrapped in a thick wool coat, leans against the doorframe of a narrow newsagent, wiping condensation from the glass with a cloth. Inside, the warm glow of a fluorescent tube catches the edge of a row of colorful majolica plates stacked near the register, their glazed surfaces reflecting the grey daylight. The shopkeeper’s hands are busy sorting a pile of post, ignoring the camera, while one drop of water slides down the exterior pane, blurring the view of the street where a red double-decker bus passes in the distance.
