Watering Geraniums in Casablanca

by Claire Stein

Morning light spills across a weathered concrete balcony in the Habous district, illuminating a row of terracotta pots where bright red geraniums burst against the pale stucco. A young boy in a crisp white school uniform pauses on the landing, holding a large, translucent glass pitcher filled with ice water, condensation dripping down the sides. He tilts the pitcher to water the nearest plant, the water catching the early sun in a bright, chaotic spray. Behind him, a blue metal mailbox stands slightly ajar, and a pair of rusted pruning shears rests on the railing, forgotten in the rush of the morning routine.
