Waiter Serving in Florence
by Gary Haynes
Under the sodium-orange glow of a Florence streetlamp, a small trattoria terrace reveals a lived-in moment of evening service. A waiter’s arm reaches into a ceramic utensil crock filled with silver forks, the metal catching a sharp specular highlight against the matte terracotta. Beside it, a half-empty bottle of local red wine sits next to a crumpled receipt, while a brass bottle opener rests on the white tablecloth, stained with wine rings. The scene is framed by the rough stucco of the building wall, illuminated by the warm, hazy spill of city lights, against the deep blue shadows of the night. One water droplet clings to a basil plant in a nearby pot, reflecting the amber streetlamp above.
