The late afternoon sun in Sapporo casts long, sharp shadows from a concrete viaduct across neat rows of allotment gardens, where bare soil and dormant winter plants sit in quiet rows. In the distance, black tetrapods line the breakwater, battered by white spray from the cold winter surf churning against the shore. A solitary figure in a heavy wool coat walks along the path between the garden plots, their breath visible in the crisp air. The light is low and golden, highlighting the texture of the earth and the stark geometry of the urban infrastructure meeting the natural coast.
