Vendor Pours Olive Oil in Terni Market Stall
by Rick Eaton
Broad skylight floods the spice vendor's table in Terni, illuminating dust motes dancing in the late summer air. A vendor's hands guide a heavy tin can, pouring a stream of golden olive oil into clear glass bottles lined up on the wooden counter. Behind the bottles, burlap sacks and woven baskets hold dried herbs and spices, their earthy tones against the bright liquid. The foreground blurs slightly, framing the action through a hanging cluster of dried peppers. Sunlight catches the rim of the tin and the glossy curve of the glass, highlighting the viscosity of the oil as it fills the vessel. The background reveals glimpses of other market stalls and the stone pavement of the street, at the base of the scene in a specific Italian locale.
