A narrow alleyway in Surabaya’s Gubeng district opens to a damp, misty dawn where condensation clings to corrugated zinc roofing and faded teal paint. A street vendor’s cart, constructed from repurposed metal and wood, sits unattended, its surface slick with morning dew. On a low shelf, a plastic pitcher and a small ceramic cup rest near a discarded plastic bag, hinting at recent preparation. The mist softens the harsh lines of the adjacent brick wall, diffusing the pale blue light. In the background, the silhouette of a motorbike passes, its headlight cutting a faint cone through the fog. The quiet transition before the city’s usual chaos, with the vendor’s tools and containers arranged with utilitarian precision.
