Tile Fragments in Casablanca at First Light

by Clayton Baxter

A damp street corner in Casablanca glistens under the pale, diffused light of early morning after a night of rain. Small, irregular fragments of zellige mosaic tile, in shades of cobalt and white, are scattered across the wet, dark cobblestones near the base of a weathered stucco wall. The wall shows signs of age with peeling paint and exposed plaster. A metal drain grate nearby catches the runoff, its surface slick and reflective. In the background, the blurred outline of a traditional wooden door with iron studs stands slightly ajar, hinting at a narrow alleyway.
