Thaipusam Devotee Carries Kavadi in Lantern-Lined Shrine

by Tyrone Kirk

Honeyed evening light falls through a fine autumn drizzle, illuminating a devotee standing beneath the shelter of a shrine in Shah Faisal Town. The individual bears a heavy, ornate kavadi, its intricate metal framework and peacock feathers glistening with rain droplets. Rows of warm, glowing lanterns line the shrine walls, casting long, amber reflections on the wet stone floor. Deep autumn leaves, turning shades of russet and gold, rest on the branches visible above the shrine entrance. The devotee’s posture remains rigid against the weight, while water beads form on the brass decorations and the wooden arch. One raindrop slides down the edge of a hanging red lantern, catching the golden glow before falling into the shadows below.
