Tending Plants in Taipei

by Edward Gibbs

Under the neon-soaked gloom of a Taipei night, a street-side plant vendor tends to a dense arrangement of potted greens behind a corrugated metal stall. The scene is lit by the harsh, cool blue of overhead fluorescent tubes and the warm, saturated red of a nearby signage glow, creating sharp, dappled shadows of broad leaves against the rough, stained plaster wall. A weathered trowel rests casually on a stack of terracotta pots, its handle stained with dried soil, while a plastic seed tray sits open nearby. The vendor, partially obscured by the foliage, uses a paper fan to cool the air around the delicate iris blossoms, their pale petals catching the mixed city light.
