Swiss Raclette Melting Over Potatoes in Saigon
by Kara Sawyer
Golden honey light pours across a weathered wooden table, illuminating a round wheel of Swiss raclette cheese as it melts into a glossy, amber pool. Thick slices of boiled potatoes sit beside the cheese, their skins still rough and earthy. The steam rises faintly, visible only as a shimmer in the warm air. Lamplight settles into the corners of the room, casting soft shadows that deepen the grain of the timber. A small metal grater rests nearby, its teeth catching the glow. The cheese stretches in a viscous thread, connecting the wheel to a potato slice, while the cool season is suggested by the heavy texture of the wooden surface and the intimate, low angle of the window light. One potato skin curls at the edge of the plate, its texture rough against the smooth, melted cheese.
