A street vendor in Kochi arranges steaming idlis on a metal tray near a narrow alleyway as the sky remains a deep indigo before sunrise. A man stands beside a concrete wash basin filled with soapy water, using a brush to scrub the side of a small boat docked along the canal. Nearby, a baker adjusts the vents of a traditional clay oven, smoke curling upward into the cool air. The wet cobblestones reflect the faint glow of a distant streetlamp. A wooden bobbin case rests on a nearby crate, unused but present in the clutter of the working waterfront. The quiet, routine activity of locals preparing for the day in this historic Indian port city.
