Sunlit Balcony in Copenhagen
by Jude Berg
Low winter sun cuts through bare birch branches, casting sharp, linear dappled shadows across the pale plaster facade of a Nyhavn townhouse. The horizon line splits the frame between the canal’s dark, still water and the sky’s pale blue. One yellow bar stool sits abandoned on a balcony ledge, tilted slightly, catching the first bright hit of morning light. Below, the wet cobblestones reflect the muted colors of moored boats, while a distant steam mop emits a faint, transient plume of vapor that dissolves into the crisp air. The rigid geometry of the architecture with the organic softness of the mist and the stark, black silhouettes of the tree limbs against the brightening sky.
