A Chicagoan in a navy windbreaker leans against a red brick corner store, adjusting a wide-brimmed sun hat that catches the low amber light of a summer evening. Behind him, the store’s open doorway reveals shelves stocked with condiments and a display of bright yellow peonies arranged in clear glass vases, their petals glowing against the dim interior. The sidewalk is cracked concrete, scattered with a few dried pebbles pressed into the wet mud near the gutter, evidence of a recent summer shower. A wooden comb rests on the windowsill next to a salt cellar, overlooked by the pedestrian traffic.
