Succulents in New Orleans

by Margaret Justice

Heavy rain streaks the exterior of a weathered iron balcony in the French Quarter, where a wrought-iron railing catches the dim, violet light of dusk. A cluster of small, potted succulents sits haphazardly on the wet ledge, their thick green leaves glistening with water droplets that reflect the warm yellow glow from a nearby streetlamp. Below the balcony, the blurred shapes of yellow taxi cabs and pedestrians with umbrellas move through the misty street, providing clear urban depth and movement. One drop of water rests on the tip of an agave leaf, perfectly suspended before falling onto the rusted metal surface below.
