Mist rests on the corrugated iron roof of a weatherboard cottage in Wellington’s Mount Victoria, where damp air softens the sharp edges of the dawn. A local vendor, wrapped in a bright yellow rain slicker, stands behind a folding table laden with steaming baskets of meat pies and flaky pastries, the heat rising in thin grey ribbons against the cool blue-grey fog. Beside the food, a battered metal magazine rack holds local papers, its surface slick with condensation, while a chipped terracotta bowl sits near a stack of white napkins.
