Street Vendor in Shanghai
by Max Hampton
Rain-slicked asphalt in Shanghai reflects the neon glow of a nearby convenience store, casting long, distorted streaks of cyan and magenta across the wet pavement. A cyclist in a translucent yellow rain poncho navigates the narrow lane, their tires kicking up a fine mist that catches the ambient light. Beside them, a street vendor’s cart steams, the heat rising in visible ribbons against the cool dusk air. On the counter, a half-peeled orange rests near a ceramic bowl, its bright zest against the damp gray surroundings. Pedestrians huddle under shared umbrellas, their faces obscured by plastic hoods, moving in a synchronized rush against the drizzle.
