A bustling San Diego street corner emerges from predawn darkness, illuminated by the harsh, flickering glow of sodium vapor streetlights. A vintage 1970s sedan is parked haphazardly near the curb, its chrome bumper reflecting the ambient orange haze. In the distance, a heavy locomotive pulls a line of passenger cars through a nearby river valley, the train’s headlight cutting through the mist and casting long, sharp shadows across the wet asphalt. Pedestrians hurry along the sidewalk, bundled in heavy coats, while steam rises from a nearby vent. The gritty, industrial rhythm of the city before sunrise, with the train’s rhythmic motion providing the only movement in the otherwise still, damp morning air.
